What is SHEV?

SHEV stands for Smoke and Heat Exhaust Ventilation (or SHEVS for Systems). It is a system that automatically or manually exhausts smoke and heat from a building in the event of a fire. By exhausting smoke quickly, escape routes remain usable longer, emergency services have better visibility, and structural damage to the building is minimized. SHEV systems are legally required in many types of buildings and form an essential part of any fire safety plan.

Smoke Domes & Extraction Vents

Smoke domes and extraction vents are the most common form of natural smoke and heat exhaust. In a fire, they open automatically—triggered by the fire alarm control panel or a localized thermal element—allowing smoke and hot gases to escape through the roof. SKE Security handles the layout design, supply, and installation of smoke domes and vents in strict accordance with current safety standards.

Mechanical Ventilation & Overpressure Systems

In facilities where natural exhaust ventilation is insufficient—such as underground parking garages, enclosed stairwells, or deep-plan buildings—SKE Security installs mechanical smoke extraction systems. Forced ventilation actively extracts smoke from the building, while overpressure systems keep escape routes completely smoke-free by maintaining a slight positive air pressure inside those zones.
